CAREER HIGHLIGHTS "Kay" Fukabori started playing golf when he was in grade school. He took his first lessons from his father Takashi. As a youngster, he entered youth golf tournaments. There met future golf superstar, Shigeki Maruyama, who became his best friend and chief rival. In 1985, Kay won the Japan Junior title and was selected as a member of the Japanese national team member for World Junior Golf. After playing for Meiji University golf team, he turned pro in 1992. Although Kay qualified and became a JPGA member, he had to wait 6 years for his first JGTO victory, the KSB Open in 1997. A year later, Kay added his second JGTO victory in the 1998 ANA Open with a big come from behind back in the final round. In 2000, Kay had his best season ever. Inspired by his long-time friend Shigeki Maruyama's performance in the US, his ambition rose even higher to compete on the PGA Tour. Kay won the Juken Open Hiroshima in July. In September he played in the Bell Canadian Open at Glen Abbey GC, which was won by Tiger Woods. Kay played an outstanding tournament, with a second round score of 66 placed him in a tie for 4th place. He ended up with a top ten finish (10th) for the tournament. With renewed confidence, his fourth carreer JGTO win came in November, beating Jumbo Ozaki. Kay finished career-high 8th on the JGTO money list, with the earnings of 78,411,008 yen ($700,000 USD). Under the JGTO's multi-winner exempt category, he has earned a 3-year exemption until the year 2002. Kay plans to come to US to play in PGA Tour events in 2001. |
